Gustave Baumann (American, b. Germany, 1881–1971)
Zinnias, c. 1915
Although best known as a master of color woodcuts, Gustave Baumann also produced sculptures, oils, and watercolors, the latter of which were often studies for eventual woodcut prints. In the studio, Baumann (American, b. Germany, 1881–1971) mixed inks to match the vivid colors used in his plein air sketches. From dramatic landscapes to still-life bouquets, Baumann’s subjects convey the beauty of everyday life.
