The bridge was opened to vehicular traffic on May 28, 1937, with almost 2 billion vehicles crossing to date. In the background is downtown San Francisco with the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge. Centered in the downtown area is the world famous Transamerica building, with its pyramid shape. Further left is the former federal prison, Alcatraz Island, commonly referred to as The Rock.
