Pacita Abad’s L.A. Liberty shines a kaleidoscopic light on the iconic Statue of Liberty, addressing the implication of race in the representation of the American Dream. Abad was born in the Philippines and emigrated to San Francisco following political persecution by the Marcos regime for leading a student protest. Informed by this experience and others, she would later note, “I have always believed that an artist has a special obligation to remind society of its social responsibility.” Her evolution as an artist involved living on six continents and visiting more than 60 countries, where she spent time with a multitude of art communities. Fusing her own techniques with the diverse methods she observed while traveling, her work spanned an expansive range of media and subject matter and continues to resonate today.
