Commonly called the Vieux Carré, or "Old Square" in French, the French Quarter is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. Hand-forged wrought iron was introduced to the city in the 1790s, but it wasn’t until the 1830s that it was mass produced, making it more affordable to create the ornate, flowery designs so prevalent in the city today.
